The 48 Hour Hitchcock Film Competition challenges filmmakers of all ages and experience levels to write, shoot, and edit a complete short film in just 48 hours—all inspired by the master of suspense.\nFrom Friday night’s kickoff to Sunday evening’s submission, teams will race the clock to create a 5-minute Hitchcockian short, using the same required line and the same classic Hitchcock film technique. The strongest films will be showcased during the Hitchcock Festival on the big screen.\nRegistration &amp; Entry Fee\n\nEntry Fee: $10 per team, due at the Kickoff Event (Free for local High School Students)\nCrew Size: Up to 10 crew members (unlimited actors)\nOne film per team\n\nKey Dates &amp; Locations\nKickoff Event\nThe Landing, Scotts Valley\nFriday, February 20th\n6:00–8:00 PM\nAt least one team representative must attend to receive the official competition details.\nFilm Submission\nThe Landing, Scotts Valley\nSunday, February 22nd\n6:00–8:00 PM\nFilms must be delivered in the proper format on a thumb drive. Export specs and guidelines will be provided at kickoff.\nFestival Screening\nHitchcock Festival\nSunday, March 8th\nTop films will be screened as part of the Hitchcock Festival.\nFilm Requirements\nTo be eligible for festival screening, all films must:\n\nBe written, filmed, and edited within the 48-hour competition window\nHave a maximum runtime of 5 minutes\nInclude the required line (same for all teams)\nUse the assigned Hitchcockian film technique (same for all teams)\nBe appropriate for a PG-13 audience or younger\n\nRequired elements will be revealed at the Kickoff Event.\nCreative Twist: Hitchcock Style\nEvery team will work from:\n\nThe same required line of dialogue\nThe same Hitchcock-inspired filmmaking technique\n(examples might include suspense through blocking, voyeuristic POV, visual motifs, or sound-driven tension)\n\nThis levels the playing field and puts the focus squarely on creativity, storytelling, and execution, plus honoring the master of suspense!\nCrew Packet\nEach team will receive a Crew Packet at kickoff (emailed to the team lead), including:\n\nRequired line of dialogue\nAssigned Hitchcockian technique\nFilm guidelines &amp; technical specs\nJudging criteria\nSubmission instructions\n\nFestival Screening &amp; Recognition\nSelected films will be screened during the Hitchcock Festival on Sunday, March 8th. Filmmakers will have the opportunity to see their work on the big screen and share it with a live festival audience.\nAwards and recognition details will be announced separately.\nFAQ Highlights\nWhat camera can we use?\nAnything you have access to—phones, DSLRs, camcorders, or professional gear are all welcome.\nWhat editing software is allowed?\nUse whatever you’re comfortable with: Premiere, Final Cut, DaVinci Resolve, iMovie, etc.\nWhat music can we use?\nOnly royalty-free music or music you have explicit permission to use. No copyrighted music without written consent.\nCan I work on more than one team?\nYes, as long as you can manage the time commitment.\nWho owns the film?\nYou do.
