Scotts Valley Performing Arts presents Annie
The Scotts Valley Performing Arts (SVPA) production of Annie is a musical based on the 1924 comic strip, Little Orphan Annie. The play tells the story of Annie, a young orphan who lives in a miserable orphanage run by the cruel Miss Hannigan.
Even though her parents abandoned her at the orphanage as a baby, she holds on to the hope that they will “maybe” come back for her. Annie decides to escape to find her parents, but is caught by Miss Hannigan. To punish Annie’s behavior, she forces all the girls to clean, and they lament the terrible conditions of the orphanage with “It’s A Hard Knock Life”.
Annie escapes, running into a friendly stray dog. She tells him of better days to come, singing “The sun will come up tomorrow”!
Set in 1930s New York, Annie’s life changes when she is chosen to spend Christmas with billionaire Oliver Warbucks, as she embarks on a journey to find her real parents while facing many challenges along the way.
The play is filled with trials and tribulations, scoundrels and good rich people (yes, there are some), and in the best Broadway tradition, it has a happy ending.
